Edgebanding Troubleshooting

Henkel EVA, PO or PUR edgebanding adhesives – tips, help and advice:

Question: The edgebanding tape pulls off easily by hand, or the hot melt adhesive remains on the core board only, why ?

  • Not enough adhesive applied, coat weight too low, check guide plate setting
  • Factory temperature too low
  • Edgebanding material or core boards too cold (stored outdoors or in a draft)
  • Hot melt adhesive temperature too low – check TDS for operating temperature
  • Feed rate too low or adhesive open time too short
  • Too little pressure applied by application roller
  • Other factors may be coming into play – call the glue experts to discuss – 0161 627 1001

Question: The majority of hot melt adhesive remains on the edgebanding tape, why ?

  • Temperature of board material too high as a result of previous processing (e.g. veneering or laminating)
  • Other factors may be coming into play – call the glue experts to discuss – 0161 627 1001

Question: The adhesive joint is not closed tightly, why ?

  • Too little compression applied, check pressure rollers
  • Adhesive too cold, store adhesive between +5c and 35c
  • Increase application temperature, check TDS for correct operating temperatures
  • Edgebanding was fed in too cold and cannot be compressed
  • Edgebanding material memory too high
  • Increase temperature or reduce feed rate
  • Too little pressure applied by application roller
  • Other factors may be coming into play – call the glue experts to discuss – 0161 627 1001

Question: The adhesive is stringy after application, why ?

  • Reduce application temperature
  • Clean gluing parts with Gard cleaner range
  • Use a filled adhesive on slower machines – Technomelt KS220
  • Other factors may be coming into play – call the glue experts to discuss – 0161 627 1001

The above is only a guide, the main issues in the colder months results from the temperature both outside and where the materials are stored in unheated areas . Cold materials prior to gluing means a risk of bond failure as a general rule ! For more detailed advice talk to the glue experts – 0161 627 1001
