Tecbond 132 Clear Glue Sticks – Making unusual sand moulds –
Sand casting is the most widely used of the casting processes in today’s foundry industries. It utilizes the making of one-off sand moulds to form complex metal parts to cylinder heads, which can be made from many types of alloys which are used extensively in today’s foundry industry. The sand mould is formed by packing sand into each half of the mould around the pattern, which is a complete replica of the external shape of the casting. When the pattern is removed, the cavity that will form the casting remains and so the casting process begins. Tecbond glue sticks are widely used for the bonding of these sand moulds used in the foundry industry.
To our surprise we where contacted by Something & Sons who wanted to do the opposite, but still involving sand to make a mould. We where intrigued, investigated further and where surprised to find creative minds at work making an array of items with glue sticks being extruded into a sand mould which was being built up, layer by layer to make the completed item. When the adhesive is cured, the mould is broken revealing a work of art ! Tecbond 132 Clear Glue Sticks where selected for the job, as the customer required a clear adhesive, with a high viscosity (thickness of the glue) for the process, applied via a Tec 820-12 glue gun.
Andy Merritt (Co founder of Something & Sons) recently travelled to Milan, Italy, to demonstrate the moulding process of creating works of art and practical decorative items by extruding Tecbond 132 Clear Glue Sticks into a sand mould. Example of the work, is this working lamp (pictured) which was made at the Milan show.
It just goes to show, Tecbond thermoplastic glue sticks are more than just an adhesive ! “Challenge us, we can bond anything !”
